Diary of a Dopey Girl: Taking on WDW’s Biggest Challenge

Marathon Weekend in January is the biggest race weekend at Walt Disney World. There are four races held that weekend: a 5k, 10k, half marathon, and full marathon. In typical Disney fashion, there are also Challenges to earn additional medals. Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge is the half marathon and the full, and the Dopey Challenge is all four races.

Last January, I completed my first full marathon. It was 26.2 miles of magic, and when I finished, I felt more proud and accomplished than I could have imagined. I immediately knew that I wanted to do it again, but this time I was all in. I wanted to be able to say that I was Dopey! One year and countless training miles later, it was go time, and I found myself less terrified than I expected. I knew I was ready, and I was extremely excited for what the weekend would hold. After a trip to opening day of the expo (where I bought everything), I was officially ready!

Day One: 5k

I was really looking forward to the 5k, mainly because at the last minute, I had thrown together a costume that I was very excited to wear: Merida! She is one of my favorites, and I felt that her bravery was an excellent theme to kick off the weekend. I boarded a  bus at 4:00am, and my buddy and Mickey Miler/Team Shenanigans teammate Sam was on the same bus. While we were hanging out at the pre-race area, I confided that my biggest concern was that I wouldn’t be able to hold back and I’d go too hard the first two days. Sam invited me to run with him and he’d make sure I didn’t overdo it. I took him up on his offer, and off we went.

This is a fun course, starting in the Epcot parking lot and entering World Showcase in Norway after Mile 1. There’s nothing more breathtaking than entering this area of the park in the dark, with the lanterns around World Showcase Lagoon lit and music playing. Runners exit down the International Gateway and then re-enter in the UK pavilion, run through Future World, past Spaceship Earth, and back out into the parking lot to the finish line.

Characters on the course included Thumper and Miss Bunny, a group of vikings in Norway, Minnie in Italy, Chip & Dale in Morocco, Canadian Donald, and astronaut Goofy by Spaceship Earth.

We stopped for the vikings, Minnie, and Donald. We saw our buddy Laurie while waiting in line for Donald, and convinced her to join us. It’s always fun running into friends on the course! I had a great time running this one, and got several on-course shoutouts for Merida. Running in the wig wasn’t as bad as I had expected – I will definitely be adding wigs to my costumes in the future!

After the race, I spent a few hours at the Magic Kingdom with my family (I obviously had to go meet Merida), but I left them in the late afternoon and went back to rest. I was determined to play it smart and stay off my feet and go to bed early. I grabbed dinner alone at the resort and was asleep before the family got back for the night. It was the right decision – I felt great the next morning!

Day Two: 10k

After another ridiculously early wakeup, I was on a bus at 3:30 and headed back to the Epcot parking lot. When I arrived, the lines for characters were shorter than they’d been the day before. I immediately grabbed a picture with Dopey, and then Minnie. Today’s outfit was in honor of my I Run 4 buddy, who was having surgery that morning. I didn’t have time to meet up with any of my teammates after the pictures, so I headed straight to my corral. I would be running solo today, which is how I run most of my races.

The first three miles of this course are fairly boring, out on the road with not much to see. I was disappointed in the characters during this section, as well, since I’d gotten pictures with two of them at Wine & Dine. Darkwing Duck was up first (although he had Scrooge McDuck with him this morning), followed by Lilo and Stitch and then Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl. I skipped all three character stops and was wondering if this race was going to be a bust.

We entered World Showcase and saw the same vikings again (another skip). And then as I ran up to the American pavilion, I saw the holy grail of character stops: Colonial Mickey, Donald, and Goofy! YES! The line was long but moved quickly, and I was able to soak up the wonderful atmosphere while I waited. I skipped vacation Genie in Morocco, since I’d gotten him at the last race, but I stopped for Pluto at the ESPN Zone on the Boardwalk. My teammate Bill was also cheering here, and he was stocked with goodies: donut holes, orange juice, and “adult” orange juice. I stopped to see him and then headed on around the Boardwalk. It was absolutely beautiful! I had so much fun during those last two miles, and I got a finish line picture that makes me smile every time I look at it.

After the race, I met up with teammates for breakfast at Trail’s End (review coming soon – I loved it!), then met the family for a few hours of park time. Once again, I headed back early to be the responsible runner. Unfortunately the weather had become a concern, and it was being rumored online that the race was going to be delayed. After much speculation, we found out that the race was completely canceled. Based on weather reports, I knew that runDisney was making the right call, but I was crushed because I wanted every one of those 48.6 miles of my first Dopey.

Almost immediately, runners began making plans to “unofficially” run the 13.1, and I knew I wanted to do that, too. One of my teammates invited me to run with a group at midnight at the Boardwalk, which sounded like fun. But by the time we arrived, there was crazy rain, thunder, and lightning. We waited awhile to see if it would pass, but I decided I didn’t want to risk slipping on the wet boardwalk and messing up my marathon. The group that was there ended up going out and running a few miles, and my teammate Heather did her entire 13.1 that night. Hats off to you, Heather – you’re a beast! I ended up heading back to my resort with a couple of other people, and I went to bed discouraged at the way my night had ended.

Day Three: The DIY Half Marathon

Saturday morning, I woke up to the sounds of cheering. I looked outside (we were staying in a lake view room at Pop Century) and realized that there were tons of runners on the path around Hourglass Lake! I threw on my Donald costume – complete with race bib – as fast as I could, and ran out to join them. When I got out there, I realized that it wasn’t just runners – there were also families cheering, holding signs, and they had even created water and snack stops!

This was one of the most inspiring things I’ve ever been a part of. A group of people who were disappointed but determined to make the best of the situation and earn those medals. Runners and spectators both began calling out to me in support as soon as I joined in. I got countless high-fives. We created character stops by taking pictures with anyone in a costume. One family even brought out “baby Stitch” and a line formed for pictures with him!

The energy of the cheer squads kept us going – I can’t put into words how much I appreciated these strangers, who were spending their morning standing out in the mist/drizzle/rain to encourage us, instead of being at a park or in their warm, dry rooms. My family was out there, and they had a blast cheering. Knowing that runs like this were springing up at various resorts all over property was amazing. I felt like I was part of something special, a little piece of runDisney history. This level of dedication and support is what makes me love the running community. If you were out there cheering or running, THANK YOU!

I may not have run the official course for the WDW Half Marathon, but I ran 13.1 miles on Saturday morning in an atmosphere that was more exciting than a lot of local races I’ve done. It felt good to finish and know that when I crossed the finish line on Sunday, I would accept my Dopey medal having completed all the miles. Will I count this as a half marathon when I talk about how many I’ve run? No. But you better believe that I will tell this story, and I’ll tell it with pride.

Day Four: Marathon

The good news: the rain had passed and the skies were clear. The bad news: an unusual cold front had moved in, bringing temps in the 30’s for the start of the marathon. Also good news: at the last minute, I had thrown my cold-weather running gear in my suitcase, so I was prepared. I layered up and boarded a bus at 3:00am. I decided to get a picture with Daisy, since I had done that last year, and I’m all about tradition. After that, I met up with some Mickey Miler teammates and one of them (thank you so much, Michelle!) was kind enough to offer me a trash bag to put over my clothes. Never underestimate the amount of gratitude you’ll feel for a trash bag when you’re shivering in the cold! I headed to my corral early, and attempted to eat a bagel and peanut butter through my shivering while I waited for the race to start.

My strategy for the marathon was thrown off by the cancellation of the half. I had planned to take it easy and stop for lots of characters at the half, but not as much at the full. I decided to just have fun and get the full experience, since just finishing Dopey was my prime objective of the weekend.

Getting a shoutout at the start line for my Mickey Milers jersey was the perfect way to begin the race! The first few miles went by quickly, since I was looking forward to one thing: running down Main Street and seeing the castle! I passed up a character stop for Jack Sparrow and Barbossa, but couldn’t resist stopping for Jack and Sally.  My general rule of stopping for characters is that I only stop for rare characters or ones that I can’t see regularly in the parks. Unless lines are really short, then all rules go out the window.

I love this part of the race! You can hear the cheering crowds before you see them. Main Street is lined with people cheering, and it’s always impossible for me not to get a little choked up. I try to soak up every minute in the Magic Kingdom, because how lucky are we to get this experience? We ran through Tomorrowland (Buzz Lightyear character stop), on through New Fanasyland (Beast greeted runners outside of his castle), and then back through the castle with a quick stop for a picture.

After the castle, it was through Frontierland (hey, Country Bears!), past the train, and backstage to exit the park. Here we found what was probably my favorite character stop – the Maleficent float from the Festival of Fantasy parade.

The next 6 or 7 miles would take us toward Animal Kingdom. Another awesome photo op was found on Bear Island Road: classic ride vehicles! And for some reason, the line was extremely short.

Around Mile 11 was an out-and-back that seemed really long, and I spent part of it trying to get around a large run/walk/run group. The only fun part of this was high-fiving runners who were coming the opposite way. We finally entered the backstage area of Animal Kingdom, and saw some performers from the Lion King as well as some animals. The park wasn’t open yet, so I snapped a quick selfie instead of waiting to ride Everest. I love running through Animal Kingdom – it’s absolutely gorgeous! I didn’t stop for any of the characters here, since I knew my family was waiting right outside. Seeing them was a real energy booster, especially since I knew I was halfway done.

After leaving Animal Kingdom, I couldn’t resist stopping for the Haunted Mansion gravediggers. How much fun is this?!

After that, it was about 5 more miles until we hit the dreaded Wide World of Sports Complex. This is a stretch of over 3 miles of running inside the complex and around the track. I was feeling good and this stretch didn’t seem as bad as I was expecting. There are bands playing at a couple of different places, as well as a couple of characters, but I didn’t stop. When we exited, we were past Mile 20 and I knew I was in the home stretch. I got to see a couple of different teammates on the course in the next couple of miles, which was exactly what I needed. It’s always great to see a friendly face and get a hug, a high-five, or even just a shout of encouragement when you’re this far into a race.

Around Mile 23, we entered Hollywood Studios for what seemed like a split second. We were given Dove chocolates, as well as bite-size Snickers and packs of M&M’s. I was so looking forward to that little piece of chocolate! It’s amazing how much you appreciate small things like a piece of chocolate or a handful of pretzels when you’re running a marathon. The spectators who are handing out snacks are lifesavers! My family was cheering at the Studios, so I got some extra special high-fives and hugs on my way out. There was also a character stop here for Oswald, and I really regret not stopping.

From here, we ran over to Epcot and around World Showcase. I saw my friends Dale and Kristen in Mexico (they were doing Margarita duty for teammates who wanted to cross the finish line with one), and stopped for a quick hug. Then it was off to finish this thing and officially earn my Dopey status! The gospel choir sang me home and I got another Miler shoutout at the finish line.

I finished this marathon about 5 minutes slower than my first one. Considering that I had added the challenge this year, and I stopped for more characters (as well as 2 lengthy waits to get into a bathroom), I was okay with that. This was an incredible, unforgettable, completely exhilarating experience that I cannot wait to do again! I’ll see you again in 2018, Dopey!

Wine & Dine Race Weekend: Lumiere’s Two-Course Challenge

Thanks to the busy, messy, craziness of life, my race recap is much later than I anticipated. But I enjoyed these two races so much that I still wanted to share that experience!

Disney’s Inaugural Wine & Dine 10k

It was another early morning, with race transportation starting at 3:30 a.m. for the first leg of Lumiere’s Two-Course Challenge. The Challenge consists of the 10k and the Half Marathon, and runners who complete the challenge earn an extra medal. I boarded one of the first buses to head to the start line, which was in the Epcot parking lot. The first thing I noticed was that there were significantly more people here than there had been for the 5k. Even though I knew this would be the case, it was still a bummer to see how long the lines were already for characters in the pre-race area. I quickly jumped in line for Lumiere, but after about 20 minutes, I realized that I was still back so far that I probably needed to ditch the line and head to my corral. The other characters available were Mickey & Minnie, Remy & Emile, and Donald & Goofy.

I like being early to my corral, and today that was especially important – it was my first time in corral A! I was thrilled to be there. Once we started moving toward the official start line, I was able to meet up with my co-blogger Jacqueline. We run about the same pace and we both love character stops, so we decided to run together. I’m so glad we did! We ended up having a blast.

The first three miles of the race are out on the road – fairly boring, other than the character stops. We stopped for a spot of tea with Mary Poppins’ penguins, then saw Flik and Atta.

Before we knew it, we were backstage at Epcot and heading for my absolute favorite part of this course. Just past mile 3, you enter World Showcase. It’s dark, the torches are lit, and music is playing. It’s absolute magic!

There are also some good character stops back here – Pinnochio & Gepetto, Vacation Genie, as well as lots of Cast Members offering support.

We left World Showcase and headed down the International Gateway over to the Boardwalk – another gorgeous place to run! We stopped for a picture with our sporty pals Chip & Dale, and then ran on past the Beach Club and Yacht Club and made our way back toward Epcot.

We ran past Spaceship Earth, and before we knew it, we were crossing the finish line!

After we got our hands on the coveted post-race boxes and had our pictures taken with our medals, we split up for pictures. Lumiere is one of my favorites, so meeting him was a must-do for me. Jacqueline got to show her new bling to Remy & Emile. I think they approve!

I’ll never get tired of running this course – I loved it. Starting in Corral A was a new experience for me, and it was awesome – the course was never crowded and the character lines were short! This was such a fun experience, and I can’t wait to do it again.

Disney’s Wine & Dine Half Marathon

For the third morning in a row, I was up in the middle of the night. Only this time, we did get the benefit of an extra hour of sleep, thanks to Daylight Savings Time! Transportation began at 3:00 a.m. again for another 5:30 start, but this time at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. The same characters from the 10k were at the pre-race area, so I got a quick picture with Mickey & Minnie and then I made a quick stop to see some of my Mickey Miler teammates before heading to my corral.

Once I was in my corral (I would be starting from D today), I met up with Jacqueline, and we decided to run together again. It really is awesome when people that you’ve met online turn out to be someone you want to be friends with IRL! We didn’t have to wait long to hear those magic words: “Runners, Set, Goooooooo!” And we were off!

This was a bit of a different course. We ran down Victory Way and then onto Osceola Parkway. For the first 3 miles, it was nothing but highway, with a couple of character stops that we opted not to stop for (Country Bears), and a screen playing old-school Disney cartoons and music. We arrived at Animal Kingdom (Rafiki was out front, just like at the 5k, but we didn’t stop this time). The Tree of Life Awakenings was playing as we entered the park. It was beautiful! I’m a big fan of AK and I absolutely love the Tree of Life, so this was a great moment for me.

We ran on through the park, stopping for pictures at Everest but passing up character stops that had also been available at the 5k.

We exited backstage and stopped to say hello to Meeko. We also ran past the Tembo House (for Elephant Care and Conservation), and past the greenhouses where we saw some fun topiaries. Chip and Dale were also back here in their Western gear, but we opted to skip them.

From there, it was back to the highway for about the next 6 miles, as we made our way toward Epcot. There were some fun characters out, and all of the lines were short. Mike and Sully, Darkwing Duck and Launchpad McQuack (AWESOME!!!), Lilo and Stitch (who seem to be a staple of runDisney events), and the Green Army Man who motivates runners to get up the hill. Hint: if you want a selfie with him, you’ll have to earn it by doing push-ups!

As we approached Epcot, the crowd support increased, and that always gives me a second wind. It’s so fun to see all the creative ways that people cheer! There was also an unexpected rare character stop – Clarabelle Cow and Horace Horsecollar!

Once inside Epcot, we ran past Spaceship Earth and did a turnaround at the entrance to World Showcase. I got my first-ever jumping picture – and it was a success!

The gospel choir sang us home right before Mile 13, and Jacqueline got her first-ever finish line shout-out! And deservedly so – she PR’d both races!

Final thoughts: This race was vastly different than it has been in years past, switching from a night race to morning. This was my third time doing it, and this course wasn’t my favorite. However, I am hopeful that will change once all the construction is done at DHS. I still had a great time – running with a friend is always fun, and to be running on a course that isn’t congested can make all the difference!

I thought they did a great job with on-course photos. There were so many photographers inside the parks, and since I’m an annual passholder, they were all included and I was able to download them shortly after the race. I was also happy to see some new – and rare – characters out on the course. I would’ve liked to have seen a couple more stops, especially with sooooo much highway running. But there’s nothing like the atmosphere of running at Disney – the level of energy, camaraderie, and crowd support is just phenomenal. I’m addicted, and this is one that I’ll be doing again!

Wine & Dine Race Weekend: Mickey’s Holiday 5k

Mickey’s Holiday 5k (formerly known as the Jingle Jungle 5k) is the first race of the Wine & Dine weekend. I was excited to be doing this race for several reasons – I’d never done it, and I was looking forward to running through Animal Kingdom and experiencing the holiday theme. I was also excited to have two of my best friends doing their first runDisney race!

Race transportation began running at 4:30 a.m., so we were up and at the bus stop shortly after that. When we got to the pre-race area, the lines for characters were already long, especially for Mickey & Minnie in their holiday attire. We hopped in line for a fun nutcracker background instead, and admired the creative costumes that were around us.

img_7061

After our picture, we decided to head over to the corral. We were technically in three different corrals, but we had decided to all start together with our friend who was still recovering from a past foot surgery. Helpful hint: at any runDisney event, you can join corrals that are further back than where you are assigned, but you can’t move forward. I knew we’d be walking a good portion of the race, which would be a new experience for me, so my only goal was to make sure my friends had as much fun as possible.

img_7073
Runners….Set…Gooooooo!

At 6:30, the first corral took off amid a swirl of snow and smoke. Soon it was our turn, and we were off! The course for the 5k started and finished in the Animal Kingdom parking lot.  There was a good bit of parking lot before we reached the entrance to Animal Kingdom. We stopped for a quick picture with Rafiki, then headed into the park.

img_7210

We skipped the next character stops – Baloo and Terk – and took our time enjoying the gorgeous Tree of Life!

img_7097

I love running through Animal Kingdom, and with the sun just starting to rise, it was truly beautiful. We got to run around the entire park – Asia is my favorite, then we were in Dinoland and another mandatory photo op – Santa Goofy and Holiday Donald!

img_7181 img_7216

One thing I really liked about this race was that there were lots of photographers on the course.  Since our only goal was fun, we took lots of silly pictures!

img_7218

Right past Mile 2, the course took us on an out and back loop backstage, which was pretty boring, other than the occasional glimpse of props and other things we wouldn’t normally see. I was excited to see some floats from the upcoming Rivers of Light show. There was also a DJ on this section, and Pluto was greeting runners at the turnaround.

Right after the end of the out and back was the marker for Mile 3, and before we knew it, we were crossing the finish line!

I love the upgraded “metal medals”!

After digging into our cheese and chips (the best part of the finish line box!), we headed into Animal Kingdom for some more fun photo ops. This was a great 5k that I will definitely run again!

Wine & Dine Race Weekend: Expo Overview

It’s the event that officially kicks off race weekend – the runDisney Health and Fitness Expo! As I mentioned before, I love going to the expo – the excitement, the photo ops, the merch – I love everything except the crowds. Going on opening morning definitely means braving the crowds, but it seems to have become my tradition.

On Thursday morning, my friends and I got up and headed to the bus stop around 8:45. There was no signage up about the race weekend at Pop Century, which was unusual. We asked a Cast Member to make sure we were in the right location (we were), and soon a bus arrived to take us to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Drop-off was a little different than I remembered it being in the past, but I’m guessing that was due to the construction that is going on.

img_6897

We stopped for the obligatory photo ops before heading into the complex. These signs always get me so excited for the medals that I will be earning!

img_6906

img_6972

Once we got closer to the buildings, there were Cast Members directing us to either go to the Field House for packet pickup and challenge shirts, or the Jostens Center for merch and other shirts. Both buildings had long lines, as it was about 30 minutes prior to opening. We had our plan, and we chose the Jostens Center first. The line was long but organized, and since the weather was nice, I didn’t mind standing outside. While waiting, we heard that some of the 10k merchandise had been pulled due to having the word ‘inaugural’ spelled wrong. As you can imagine, lots of jokes ensued.

img_6919
We’re getting close!
img_6921
Long line for the merchandise building!

When it was time to go inside, they slowly allowed the line inside and down the stairs. Most people rushed straight back to the official merchandise. It didn’t seem like they were limiting the number of people inside (at least at opening), and it got crazy very quickly! My friends and I split up – they were on a mission to get wine glasses, and I was after a sweatshirt. The wine glasses went quickly and it was a bit of a mob scene. The Challenge and Half Marathon magnets also went quickly, and we were told by a CM that there were more, but the box had been misplaced. Luckily another CM overheard me telling this to my friend as we were walking to the checkout, and she went back and found some.

img_6928
So. Many. People.
img_6969
…and even more people!

After checking out (I’m still impressed by how efficiently they manage to handle the long lines), we made a couple of stops at other vendors. Sparkle Skirts, Raw Threads, and New Balance are always favorites. We also stopped to have a little fun at the Misfit jump rope challenge. I made it onto the leaderboard, at least briefly! Before leaving, we made one final stop where our spectator decorated some signs and Cheer Squad buttons to show her support. This is the first time that I’ve seen the buttons and thought they were pretty cool.

When we walked across to the Field House, packet pickup was quick and painless – the lines were very short. After grabbing my Challenge shirts and taking a few pictures, we quickly made our way back over to the other building (which was still so crowded that we had to wait in line again just to get in) to get the 5k shirts, and then headed back to the bus to return to the resort.

Who doesn’t love a photo op with a giant bottle of bubbly?

I checked in with friends who attended on other days, and heard that it wasn’t crowded at all on Friday, but a couple of items in the official merch booth were sold out. By Saturday, it was described as a ghost town. Unless you’ve got your heart set on a specific item (which I usually do), you’ll probably have an easier time if you wait and don’t attend on opening morning.

Were you at the Wine & Dine Expo? What was your experience like? We love hearing from you!

The Evolution of the runDisney Costume

Almost exactly two years ago, I started training for my first ever runDisney race!  A non-runner for most of my life, I started running when I turned 45.  When my BFF started joining me, it became even more fun!  When we decided to combine our love of Disney with our new-found love of running, Disney’s Princess Half Marathon Weekend was an easy choice!

Thousands of women choose Princess as their “gateway” race, and it’s not surprising!  With its promise of tutus and tiaras, this women-centric race draws women of all ages, shapes and sizes, and of all running abilities.  I mean-who doesn’t want to be Princess for a day?

img_4531
Snow White and Rapunzel for the Enchanted 10K…part of our first Glass Slipper Challenge!

We signed up for all three races…the Princess 5K, and the Glass Slipper Challenge, which includes the Enchanted 10K and the Princess Half Marathon.  Crazy, right?  That’s 22.4 miles!!  Three races over three days meant a lot of training, but it also meant we each got to create three running costumes!

Tech?  Who Needs Tech?

As a newbie runner, my running wardrobe consisted of whatever workout gear I had lying around.  Gym shorts, leggings, sweatshirts…but I knew I had to up my game for Princess!

Inspiration can come from the most unlikely places-so keep your eyes open!  A $7 blue clearance tank at TJMaxx became the focal point of my Snow White costume for the 10K.  A blue skirt from Goodwill worked perfectly for Anna for the Frozen 5K (as did the cape that belonged to my daughter’s Disney Store costume!).  Claire’s at the mall had a horn headband and a “one size fits all” Maleficent-inspired tutu that I squeezed over a tank and short set found at Marshall’s for my half marathon!  Throw in some Hot Topic bows, eBay wings and etsy arm puffs and I was good to go!

My best friend, Tiffany, suggested I think about some specialty running gear, but I laughed and brushed her off.  $65?  For a skirt?  (Oh, how naive these conversations seem now…and what an innocent I was…!)  LOL!

img_4091
Running costumes for my first runDisney challenge weekend!

Fast forward to post-race.  The truth was…my pictures came out cute, but from a performance-standard, I was a bit disappointed.  My outfits had no storage, and I hated wearing my phone on my arm.  The second-hand Anna tank was cotton and not suited for running, and wouldn’t have held up for longer than the 5K!  My yellow clearance skirt from Dancewear Solutions had no built in shorts, and there may be a picture of me crossing the finish line flashing my runderpants!

Girlfriend Knows Best

So, it turns out my friend was on to something.  For our next races, she talked me into some skirts.  Not just any skirts, but skirts with POCKETS!! This was life-changing!  A quick run around the neighborhood doesn’t require much, but if you are planning to run five miles or more-you need gear!

Pockets meant I had a place to stash my phone when I got tired of carrying it.  Pockets meant a place for for my Sports Beans, e-shots and lipstick.  (Yes, I run with lipstick…I’m kind of addicted!)  It also meant a zippered compartment for money or credit cards.  I got two skirts, an Emerald Peacock Sparkle Skirt and an Inknburn polka dot skirt-and ideas for Zarina the Pirate Fairy and Minnie Mouse were born!

img_3257
Not Pictured: iPhone, lipstick, fuel, tissues and cash hidden in my pockets! Thanks Sparkle Skirts!

So you might have noticed I have a little problem with accessories!  Once my basic pieces are secure, I love finding the little touches that pull a running costume together!  Party stores are a great place to find inexpensive pieces, especially off-season or right after Halloween.  I’ve scored fingerless Minnie gloves, Ariel clip-on hair pieces and Jasmine body jewelry!  The Disney Store isn’t just for kids, either-I’ve picked up tiaras for Elsa, Jasmine and even Pocahontas, as well as Zarina wings!

Inknburn skirt, raw threads racer and Sparkle Athletic race legs.

Another discovery was Sparkle Athletic race legs!  These decorative sleeves are footless, so you can still wear your favorite socks.  My Achilles are chronically tight, so I typically tape and wear Zensah compression sleeves for my longer runs.  These can get expensive (especially if you are matchy-matchy like me and want them to match your outfits!) but if I can pull a pair of $12 race legs on over them, I only need a few pairs.  http://www.sparkleathletic.com

Princess 2.0

By the time Princess Half Marathon Weekend rolled around again, I had a much better idea of what worked for me from both a running and aesthetic standpoint.  Sparkle Skirts were my go-to skirts, with their fun themed prints, compression shorts and large 5×5 pockets, but I had also found my signature tops!

I heard about this online company, raw threads, that was also a big presence at the runDisney Expos.  Their claim to fame was their fabric… breathable, moisture-wicking, “no stink” bamboo that drapes the skin in comfort.  Sounded good to me!  Though retail might look pricey, they regularly offered sales with steep discounts, and so another addiction was born!  http://www.rawthreads.com

Though I typically only run in racers, they have a great selection of tees, tanks and even hoodies that evoke certain classic Disney characters.  This includes the Princesses, Villains, Star Wars and even Avengers, with seasonal holiday designs, as well!  (Hint:  Wondering how people afford all this?  There is a very robust resale market for all of these items in various Facebook groups…it’s very common for runners to list skirts, tops, even full running costumes for sale to fund their next big runDisney event!)

Props or No Props?

It is probably no surprise by now that I am pro-props!  If you don’t need to be hands-free, props are a fun way to make your character even more recognizable.  It is also a lot of fun to incorporate them into playful photo-ops both on the course and in the Parks!

Various props for the Pixie Dust Challenge and 5K in Disneyland…parrot head umbrella, cat tail, ears, hats and gloves!

The easiest props to carry are the wearable ones!  I have worn wings twice (representing both good and evil!) and they are extremely easy to run in.  The trick is…don’t pull the elastics around your arms, which can cause chafing.  Tutorials on youtube demonstrate how to attach wings directly to your clothes, anchored to the back of your sports bra!  This is easiest with racer styles, but can be modified for other shirt styles as well.

These wings are extremely light…just don’t bump into other runners!

Another wearable prop is headwear!  Whether you like Minnie ears, tiaras, headbands, hats or visors there is a style to match every outfit!  I wear themed Minnie ears to most races, and my faves have included ears inspired by pirates, Ariel and the Queen of Hearts!  Etsy shops like Make Me Minnie and Ears2You have done a great job of customizing ears for me.  Most memorable was the Mary Poppins hat on a headband I requested, but themed ears and hats can also be found right in the Parks!

Ears2You customized this Mary Poppins headband for me!  Lace trim and a red bow transformed this plain racer to Nanny Mary!

Other props I have worn include tails (Cheshire Cat), necklaces, gloves (mermaid scales for Ariel, jangly coins for Jasmine) and Hot Topic bows I attach to my sneakers!  The most memorable?  It would have to be the two moray eel Beanie Babies I attached to elbow length black gloves to mimic Flotsam and Jetsam when I ran as Ursula from The Little Mermaid!

The other kind of props include carried props!  I have carried everything from Jasmine’s magic lamp to Mary Poppin’s parrot head umbrella!  As Zarina I carried a foam sword and as Snow White I carried a songbird!  I always carry my phone as well, so I don’t mind being double-fisted, as long as the prop is not too heavy or cumbersome!

One disclaimer regarding props and costumes in general-always check to see that you’re in compliance with the new runDisney guidelines!  Some of the more recent changes have included no full-length costumes and no costumes that fully enclose the body.  (Think The Death Star from Star Wars!)  Full face masks and pointy props that look like weapons have never been allowed, but are more strictly enforced now.  Do your research so you know just what to expect on race day!  http://www.rundisney.com

Other Resources

Maybe you don’t want to run in a skirt.  Or you like to run in layers.  Maybe you want something simpler, or more elaborate!  There are still a ton of resources out there for you!  In addition to scouring new finds at TJMaxx and Marshalls, many women swear by the affordable and cute athletic wear in Target and Walmart.  Both offer a wide range of styles and sizes.  If you don’t require tech gear, department stores like Torrid, Hot Topic and Forever 21 typically have tons of themed Disney items, too!

As soon as I spotted this pink striped tech top at TJMaxx I knew what I was going to use it for!

Etsy is also a treasure trove of pre-made running costumes and custom Minnie ears if you want something specific and don’t mind paying for it!  Though I have never bought a ready-made costume for myself, I splurged for my daughter’s first running costume!  She chose the Mary Poppins theme for our first runDisney race together…the Neverland 5K during the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend in Disneyland!  It was worth every penny!  Some of my favorite etsy and independent sellers include The Bow Mama, iglowrunning, This Princess Runs and Designz by Michelle Lynn.

Finisher Medal Worthy!

Ultimately, your runDisney race costume should be comfortable and a reflection of you and your style!  Big budget or small, crafty or two thumbs, it’s easy to tap into your inner Minnie!  Every mile is magic!
