Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party: the Final Night!

When I found out that I would be arriving in Orlando on November 1st, the last night of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party , I knew I had to be there. I have been to the party before, but it had been a few years. I had  originally planned to hit the party solo, but my friend Kerry ended up rearranging  her schedule to join me. I’m so glad she did – we had such a great time!

Costumes are allowed (although there are some rules!), and I usually jump at the chance to wear something fun. However, since whatever I was going to wear had to be worn or carried onto my flight that morning, I kept it light and recycled my Officer Judy Hopps costume from last year’s Wine and Dine Half Marathon.

Kerry and I are ready to party!

We ended up arriving right around 4:00 pm, which is when you can enter the park with your party ticket (even though the party technically doesn’t begin until 7:00). Party-goers are given special wristbands and then guided into a backstage area by cast members, where we were given our trick or treat bags, along with the first candy of the evening.  There were also several photo ops along the path, before we were routed back out into the park.

Around 7:00, when the party officially began, the atmosphere of the park changed dramatically. The lighting and music changed to a festively spooky tone. Guests were also asked to show their wristbands in order to go on any attractions, and I saw several cast members explaining to day guests that it was time to leave unless they wanted to purchase a separate party ticket.

Spooky lighting (and a perfect sky to match!) at Pirates.

My friend and I  had both previously been to the party, and we knew the importance of having a plan. We each had a couple of must-do’s, but we also knew that it would be impossible to do everything. Since we had both previously met the most popular characters, standing in a 2+ hour long line wasn’t on our agenda.

Party-Exclusive Snacks

One thing that was on the agenda was trying as many party-exclusive snacks as possible.  My favorite of these was easily the Pumpkin  Mickey Waffle at Sleepy Hollow Refreshments. It came with two waffles, delicious vanilla ice cream, and a caramel drizzle. Perfect for sharing!

The next set of treats on my list were the Haunted Mansion desserts that were found in five different locations (Liberty Square Market, Aloha Isle, Storybook Treats, Galactic Goodies, and Auntie Gravity’s). The first one we tried was filled with Raspberry Compote and topped with white chocolate mousse. This was tucked inside a chocolate tart shell and had a white chocolate piece on top, with the Haunted Mansion design on it. It looked great, but unfortunately tasted a bit like cardboard. Neither of us were impressed.

We decided to give these one more shot, so we tried the chocolate peanut butter tart. Waaaaaaay better than the first one! You really can’t go wrong with peanut butter! However, we decided that we’d probably be disappointed with the other variations of this snack and agreed to abandon our mission to try them all.

Unfortunately, time passes way too quickly at these parties, and we weren’t able to try everything (although we did enjoy some delicious popcorn while waiting for the parade). The other party exclusive treats included:

-Mickey Pumpkin Cheesecake Dome

-Jack  Skellington Push-pop style dessert

-Candy Corn Ice Cream (word on the street is that this is actually just vanilla soft serve)

-Worms n’ Dirt

-Vampire Mickey brownies

Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular

Hocus Pocus has been very popular around my house this year, so I couldn’t wait to see this show! It was funny, and I loved seeing favorite classic Disney villains incorporated into the story. The projections onto the castle were also amazing to see!

Mickey’s “Boo to You” Halloween Parade

This parade runs twice per night, and is kicked off by the Headless Horseman riding down the  street! There are classic characters dressed up for Halloween, villains, pirates, and the crowd favorites – the Haunted Mansion gravediggers and ballroom dancers! All of this, along with a catchy song that will surely be stuck in your head for days, makes for the best parade at Walt Disney World! If you’ve never seen it, I strongly suggest heading to YouTube ASAP!

We watched the second parade, which meant that crowds were significantly lighter. In fact, when we walked back to Frontierland about 30 minutes prior to the start of the parade, the area was pretty much deserted. We had a great view and got several interactions with characters.

I love all of the detailed floats in this parade!

Happy Hallowishes Fireworks

Another party must-do is the special fireworks.  The crowds were pleasantly light on the final night of the party, so we were able to get a great view front and center. This is not always the case, so if you are attending on a crowded night, you’ll want to stake out a spot early. Don’t get too close, though, or you’ll miss the awesome effects of the circumference fireworks. So cool!

Special Character Meet and Greets

One of the biggest draws of the holiday parties is the opportunity to meet rare characters, or classic characters in holiday attire. The most popular characters at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary are Jack and Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas and the Seven Dwarfs. Both lines can easily run 2-3 hours (or more!), so it is advised to line up for those right at 4:00 if you are interested.

Other characters at the party included: Mickey and Minnie, Donald and Daisy, Alice and the Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts with Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum, the Winnie the Pooh gang, Ariel and Eric, Belle and Gaston, Lotso, Anastasia and Drizella, Cruella DeVil, Tarzan, Jane, and Terk, Moana, Captain Jack Sparrow, Aladdin and Abu, Genie and Jasmine, and Belle and Gaston.

Since we had met many of the most popular characters (thanks, runDisney!), characters weren’t high on our list of priorities. However, with about 10 minutes left in the party, we stopped for a quick photo with the Queen of Hearts with Tweedle-Dum and Tweedle-Dee.

If you intend to meet characters, I strongly suggest deciding beforehand which ones are most important. Character lines can eat up a lot of valuable party time!

Trick or Treating

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary is the one place where adults are encouraged to trick or treat! There are stations set up across the park, clearly marked with a light-up sign. Lines were short on our party night, and since it was the last night, cast members were giving out handfuls. This year, the candy was Mars brand, which meant lots of Snickers, M&Ms, Twix, and Skittles.  There was also an area guests could go to get some allergy-free treats. Everyone is included at Mickey’s party!

If you plan to focus heavily on trick or treating, you may want to bring your own bag. Guests are given small bags when entering the party, but they can fill up quickly! One more tip: trick or treating lines get much shorter at the end of the night!

Rides

During the party, lines for rides are typically very short, since many guests are focusing on other special experiences. The exception to this is Haunted Mansion, since it gets some special party treatment! This is the one ride that I would consider a must-do during the party. There is fog, cast members have on additional makeup, and there is a special ghost out front, chatting (aka heckling) guests, and she is hilarious!

We had ridden earlier in the evening, but made sure we stopped by just to watch Madame Carlotta (she sometimes switches out with her sister Rinotta) interact with guests. She was great – a definite must-see!

We also managed to get a ride on 7 Dwarfs Mine Train right as the party was ending. I got to walk through the queue for the first time ever (I don’t ever ride this one without a fastpass!), and our ride was a great way to end the evening.

Party-Exclusive Magic Shots

This year there seemed to be more opportunities for special Magic Shots than ever before! We wanted to try as many as we could, and several of them turned out great! My favorites were the Headless Horseman and the Haunted Mansion lantern. There were several others that we just didn’t have time for or didn’t see.

One of the coolest things we saw while waiting in line for a picture was a beautiful bride and groom in their wedding attire. They said they’d gotten married a week earlier, but jumped at the chance to be able to take pictures in the park in the wedding dress!

Monstrous Scream-o-Ween Ball

Instead of the usual dance party back in Tomorrowland, Mike and Sully (and some of their pals) take over and party with the crowd. We made a quick stop when we saw George Sanderson dancing – who doesn’t want a picture with him?!

Final Thoughts

Maybe it was because everyone was already over Halloween, but November 1st seemed like a great night to be at the party! The crowds were light, everyone was still feeling festive, and we accomplished more than I had ever accomplished at a party before. I had such a wonderful time, and I’m already plotting to make it back for a party next year.

One other thing that I thought was really cool was that I exited the park around 12:30 am, and it was still fully decorated for Halloween. The next morning I entered around 8:00 am, and just like magic, it was Christmas! It really is amazing how things like this happen literally overnight.

If a party is in your future, just remember that there is no possible way to do EVERYTHING! Managing expectations and having a plan is going to be the key to a successful night. And once you make a plan, be willing to be somewhat flexible, as things can change depending on crowds and weather. Relax, enjoy it, and be ready for a magical, not-so-scary night!

There is so much going on at Disneyland right now….

We all know that Walt Disney World is a pretty awesome place with four parks, two water parks and over 25 Disney resort options.  There is lots to do and see and experience!

With that being said, Disneyland is pretty awesome right now as well!  We even have a few new experiences that Walt Disney World doesn’t have!  So I decided that I would write a little bit about what I know from experience at Disneyland and what I’m looking forward to for the remainder of 2017!

Max Pass is a GO!

The Disneyland resort launched MaxPass in July (much to the dismay of many California residents) and I LOVE IT!

MaxPass is an electronic fast pass system based in the Disneyland mobile app.  Visitors can pay a $10 per person per day fee and have access to fast pass availability on their smart phones. Disneyland still offers the kiosk fast pass option with the cards as they have done in the past, but now fast passes are linked to your park ticket and the kiosk cards are just a reminder of the time.  Unlike Walt Disney World, where you can choose up to three in advance, MaxPass only allows one choice every 90 minutes.

If you’re a Disneyland Annual Passholder with a signature pass level or higher, the best news is that it’s all free for you!  Have you experienced MaxPass?  What do you think of it?

I helped free the Guardians of The Galaxy from the Collector’s museum!

You say Tower of Terror and I say Tower of what? Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout opened in May of this year and IT’S AWESOME! The plot behind the attraction is you helping Rocket rescue the Guardians of the Galaxy from the collector’s collection.  While the ride experience is the same as Tower of Terror, the queue is all new and there is a ton of production behind the story line.  There are 6 different production which you can experience if you’re willing to wait in multiple lines.  Get ready to rock out with Rocket and help him out because his hands don’t scan! Check out the video of the pre-show.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4c32Mt6oEB8

(Photo via Mouseplanet)

Want more awesomeness? They have added a whole new production for the Halloween season called Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark! Find out what happens when the other “collections” go loose in Tivan’s gallery!  I’ve done it but I’ve promised Rocket I’ll keep it quiet until all of the guardians are safely out of the building.

RunDisney came back in a BIG way!

If you have read some of our previous articles, then you might know that the Neverland Press team are big fans of RunDisney. With the disappointing Tinkerbell Half Marathon weekend race experience and the lack of information regarding the 2018 Star Wars – Light Side race weekend, it had appeared that Run Disney west coast was about to crash and burn. So I was a little skeptical of what was going to happen during the Disneyland half weekend. While there is no official word on Light Side yet (as of 10/13/17), the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

This year, RunDisney decided to celebrate Pixar with an Incredibles themed 5k, a Monsters University 10k and a Toy Story themed half marathon.  As big fan of the Toy Story franchise, I was in heaven.

During the Tinkerbell half weekend, RunDisney decided to cut the character stops or turn them into “selfie stops”.  Naturally this caused an uproar with the runners, so they added a few as the weekend went on during each race.  During the Disneyland half weekend, the character interactions were everywhere!  From Pixar Play parade floats and dancers to Mike, Sully, Roz photo stops and Toy Story characters, great courses and even a run through Angel’s Stadium, the spirit of Pixar was everywhere!

The weather left a lot to be desired with extremely hot temperatures all weekend and even moving to “red flag” status during the half marathon (which is one step shy of cancelling the race) as the morning got hotter. But from the expo to the medals to the awesome announcing team (with amazing costumes this year I might add), we all had an amazing time and this will go down as probably my second favorite RunDisney event.

Our fabulous race announcer Andrea Kooiman!
Team Shenanigans celebrates an amazing weekend!

This is Halloween, this is Disneyland Halloween!

Twas the nightmare before Christmas and all throughout the house, not a creature was peaceful… not even a mouse!

Sorry Florida!  Haunted Mansion Holiday belongs to California (and Tokyo) and it’s BEAUTIFUL!! Since 2001, each year as we approach Halloween, Disneyland dramatically transforms the Haunted Mansion into a Christmas wonderland for Jack Skellington and tells the tale of Sandy Claws!

From a distance, it’s difficult to tell that there has been an overlay added to the regular Haunted Mansion attraction.  But when you get close to the mansion and see the exterior décor and interior sets that have been replaced, it’s like an entirely new attraction!  There is even an entirely different queue which sets the tone for Jack’s adventure.

Every aspect of the Nightmare Before Christmas story line is included in some form on the attraction.  Sally, Zero and even Oogie Boogie make a few appearances. One of my favorite parts of the ride is the ballroom scene.  They add a gingerbread scent as your doom buggy passes over the joyous holiday chaos happening below and the one of a kind gingerbread house on the center table.

The Haunted Mansion Holiday attraction will be open in Disneyland until very early January 2018!

Well that’s all folks!  Stay tuned to part 2 of my Disneyland update to see what’s happening over at Space Mountain and how Cars land and California Adventure celebrates Halloween!  Oh yeah.. Christmas season is coming too!!  I’m so excited!

Wild Africa Trek: Crossing One Off the Bucket List!

For the past few years, I have stared longingly at those rope bridges every time I rode Kilimanjaro Safaris at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. I love Animal Kingdom, and I really love the safari (I usually ride it at least twice each time I’m in the park), and the Wild Africa Trek has been at the top of my Disney Bucket List for a couple of years now. So you can imagine my excitement when I found out that my husband had booked it for me as an early birthday gift! I was positively giddy that I was going to get to cross those bridges! I’d be up close with the animals, and I’d be eating breakfast while overlooking the Savannah. The only downside was that I’d be going alone – as much as he wanted to join me, we’d be traveling with just our youngest child, so I’d have to fly solo. But I don’t mind adventuring alone, so off I went!

I met up with the group at the gates of the park, which wasn’t open yet. A guide escorted us (through a totally empty Harambe!) back to an area beside Kilimanjaro Safaris. We were given complimentary lockers and asked to stow all of our belongings. We weren’t even allowed to wear our Magic Bands – there are very strict rules on what may be brought on the tour. Sunglasses may be worn (and a strap provided), and cameras or phones may be brought, if they’re attached to you. I purchased this strap from Amazon for my phone. However, I would definitely encourage you to just enjoy the sights and not worry too much about taking your own pictures. One of the guides was taking pictures the entire time, so every moment will be captured!

There’s nothing like strolling through an empty park!

We signed waivers, got our name tags, and (literally) weighed in. But don’t worry – no one will see your weight, even you! This is just another safety precaution. We were fitted with vests, harnesses, and ear pieces, and given a souvenir water bottle. After introductions and going over a few instructions, we began our tour!

Ready to go! Excitement level = 10!

Walking Portion: Hippos, Crocs, and Rope Bridges!

We began by walking through a portion of the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. This is not a backstage area, but the park wasn’t yet open, so we had the entire space to ourselves. Even though this was an area I’d walked through many times, it was really cool to hear new things about it, and even learn the names of some of the animals. After this, we headed backstage and through the “forest” down to an overlook by the hippos. The harnesses I mentioned earlier were used to clip us onto a bar that allowed us to safely move to the edge of the overlook.

We were met there by one of the keepers who had some snacks for the hippos. I was fascinated to learn that they are currently trying to breed these two hippos, AND they previously  had a baby (who is all grown up  now, and had been the hippo we saw earlier, covered in tiny fish). I loved watching the hippos eat the watermelon, and a brave duck that tried to grab some, too! Our guide did a great job of posing each person for a picture with the hippos. Being this close was AMAZING!

After walking a bit further, we came to the part I’d been waiting for: the rope bridges! We were given a quick demonstration on how we’d be secured, and then one of our guides crossed first so she could photograph the rest of us. For safety purposes, there can only be two people on the bridge at a time, and there was no rush. And let me tell you – it was worth the wait! It was absolutely exhilarating to be up there. I tried to savor every moment and take in every sight. I still get excited when I think about how it felt!

When I crossed to the second bridge, the crocodiles seemed so close! As I passed over, the ones behind me began splashing and causing quite a ruckus! The guide called to me not to be worried, that it had nothing to do with me. I assured her I wasn’t worried – this was AWESOME!

After everyone crossed, we met with one of the keepers of the crocodiles. We were again clipped on to a safety rail and allowed to get a little closer to the animals while she told us about them and answered our questions.

Riding Portion: Savannah!

After leaving the crocs, we boarded our very own safari vehicle (smaller than the ones used on Kilimanjaro Safaris, with benches on the sides instead of in the middle) to head over to the Savannah. Waiting for us on board were binoculars and cooling towels, which were much appreciated! As we drove across the Savannah, we were able to stop several times for a closer view. As we passed the elephant habitat, we noticed there were no elephants out yet, but there were keepers driving around and dropping food in various places. Our guides told us that we might get to see the elephants entering their habitat a little later!

We stopped for breakfast at a scenic overlook with an amazing view of all the animals roaming the plains. My favorite part was when the elephants made their appearance – we got to watch them parade out, and the baby (Stella) was running to keep up.

Our breakfast was presented in a camping-style tin, and included air-dried beef and prosciutto, smoked salmon roulade with dill, fig cake with Boursin cheese, Brie cheese and apricot, berry yogurt and dried cranberries, and fresh fruit marinated in mint and ginger.  It was delicious! I’m not a big meat eater, but I enjoyed almost all of it, especially the fruit. There was also carafes of water and the delicious juice that is served at ‘Ohana and Tusker House. This was also the only bathroom break on the trek!

After eating, we were able to walk around and take pictures and enjoy the view. The photographers offered to take pictures of all of us, and there were also walkways behind the enclosure where we could wander by ourselves and see the animals. It was so serene and beautiful! I could’ve easily stayed there all day.

All too soon it was time to board our vehicle and continue our journey. Along the way, we got a great view of the white rhino – so cool!

The three-hour tour seemed like it flew by, and before I knew it, it was time to say “kwaherini”. As we exited the tour, we were each given a stone. We learned that a portion of the ticket price for the trek is donated to the Walt Disney Conservation Fund. They went a step further and let us choose which branch of the fund our money went to, by placing the stone in the corresponding box.

We were also given a code which allowed us to download all of the photos that the guides had taken on the tour. This is included in the price of the trek, and the photos were amazing!

Final Thoughts and Tips for Future Trekkers

If I was giddy with excitement before the tour, I was even more so afterward. It was such a wonderful experience, and one that I can’t wait to do again! The guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. They made sure that everyone in the group felt included, and they clearly loved the animals. The cost of the tour is $189 – $249, depending on the time of year, and worth every penny. Annual passholders do get a discount, and there is also a summer special that offers $50 off of afternoon tours.

I would highly recommend the early morning tours (they begin at 8:00), and you’ll want to make sure you wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes. I also suggest wearing comfortable pants or shorts – remember, you’ll have a harness around the tops of your legs! After talking to some experienced trekkers, I chose to wear athletic capris, which worked out great.

I am already planning to do this tour again! I’m sure every trek is different, since you can’t predict what the animals will do or where they’ll be. If you love going on Kilimanjaro Safari and want an even closer look, I can’t recommend this tour enough! It is an unforgettable Disney adventure.

Our amazing guides made sure this was the best day ever!

Review: Animal Kingdom’s Nomad Lounge

If you are a weary traveler to Disney’s Animal Kingdom and are in need of a respite from the hustle and bustle of theme park trekking, look no further than Nomad Lounge.   Sitting right next to Tiffins on the road from Discovery Island to Pandora: The Land of Avatar, you will find this traveler’s favorite watering hole in all of Walt Disney World.   The lounge welcomes you with comfy over-sized chairs and sofas. You even have the option of outdoor or indoor seating (the first being my favorite) overlooking the bridge crossing to Pandora.

The food menu is small but diverse, including favorites like Tiffins’ bread service. This includes pita bread, a sweet loaf and fried wontons, as well as  three delectable sauces. (If you get the chance, ask for an extra sauce – Molasses/Pomegranate, it was once offered with the breads and then changed.) All of this is served inside of a tiffin!  A personal favorite is the Selection of Artisanal Cheeses. This menu item includes a soft cheese made with lavender, blue cheese with local raw honey, a fig bar and other tasty cheeses served with crunchy bread slices.

No lounge can be complete without a unique libations menu and Nomad does not disappoint.  For beer drinkers, I would suggest the Kungaloosh Spiced Excursion Ale – a beer that gives a nod to the former Adventure’s Club over at Pleasure Island.  While it is a dark ale, it is very smooth with a little bit of a sweet finish. Mixed drinks include Annapurna Zing, made with Bombay Sapphire gin and ginger beer, or the exotic Night Monkey with guava, coffee, rum and lime juice.

If coffee is more your style, Nomad offers press pots with Indonesian and Ethiopian brews as well as Mustang Coffee, a mix of Crown Royal, butter and coffee.  The lounge also has an assortment of non-alcoholic drinks such as the Lilly Gorillie, a refreshing combination of strawberry and Sprite, or the Hibiscus Henna, with flavors of watermelon, lime juice and soda water.

One of my absolute favorite things about Nomad is the menu itself, which offers a glimpse into the trips that Imagineers had taken in order to build Animal Kingdom.  It is fascinating and woven into the pictures and descriptions of the various drinks.

So if you would like a quiet spot to relax, check out Nomad Lounge on your next trip to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

My (very first) D23 Expo Adventure!

I have to admit.  When I began to plan this blog post, I had a completely different direction was going to go in.  But after my first visit to the D23 expo this weekend, the direction has changed.

I’ll just get it out of the way now and let you know that my experience didn’t go the way I had hoped it would. Maybe I did it wrong? I dunno. I’m hoping the readers of this blog can help me figure it out.

If you haven’t been to the D23 Expo, its held every other year in Anaheim, CA at the convention center.  It’s the ultimate Disney fan event.  D23 is the official Disney fan club. It began in 2009 and has blossomed into a massive group of Disney enthusiasts. Membership is required and open to anyone. They offer different levels of memberships – some of which cost money.  Since I live in southern California now, and because I’m a member, it was a no brainer – I needed to go.

I’ll admit – with a hectic schedule, the only day I could go for sure was Sunday. I figured that it would be a little less crowded and I’d have more opportunity to experience the expo.

The entire weekend is filled with all things Disney from Pixar to Star Wars and everything Disney pop culture related.  Set up of the “exhibits” are done big and exceed most “comic con” events in my opinion.  There are celebrity signings, animation and event panels, concerts and shopping options. Sunday couldn’t come fast enough!

Let me take a quick step back and give you some of the awesomeness (announcements) that came out of the Disney parks panel event that occurred on Sunday.  These announcements only fueled my excitement for Sunday’s adventure!  I think we can all admit that we LOVE Disney parks and the changes (some of which have been in the works already) are very exciting.  USAtoday.com did a great job at laying out all of the announcements. (https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/experience/america/theme-parks/2017/07/18/disney-parks-d-23-expo-announcements-new-rides/489404001/)

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
We’ve known for a while that new 14-acre Star Wars-themed lands would be coming to both Disneyland Park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. The expo revealed models of the highly anticipated lands and more details, including that they would be named Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Both will open in 2019, with the California version debuting first. Visitors will be able to interact with characters such as Kylo Ren and BB-8, dine at the Cantina, and otherwise geek out in the highly immersive, sci-fi havens.

Star Wars-themed hotel
For those who just can’t get enough of the galaxy far, far away, Disney World visitors will soon be able to sleep among wookies and Jedi knights. Calling it Disney’s “most experiential concept ever,” Chapek announced that a new Star Wars-themed luxury resort will invite guests on a multi-day voyage aboard a starship. Every window, the parks chairman promised, will have a view of space.

Epcot makeover
Epcot, which opened in 1982 and has been showing its age, will be getting a lot of Imagineering love. In its initial inception, the park struck a serious tone and had an edutainment focus geared largely to adults. The company plans to continue injecting more whimsy into Epcot.

  • Guardians of the Galaxy attraction
A new E-Ticket attraction based on the popular Marvel franchise will take over Ellen’s Energy Adventure in the former Universe of Energy pavilion.
  • Ratatouille attraction
Coming to the France pavilion in Epcot’s World Showcase, the new ride will be based on the popular Disneyland Paris attraction. That 4D ride shrinks visitors down to the size of Remy, the gourmet chef who happens to be a rat, and sends them on an adventure using sophisticated trackless vehicles.
  • New mission for Mission: Space
In addition to sending passengers on a mission to Mars (which will be getting new media), the Epcot attraction will offer a toned-down experience that will take guests on an orbital adventure above Earth. Younger kids will be able to blast off on the revamped ride, which will reopen later this summer.
  • Space-themed restaurant
Next to Mission: Space, Epcot will be adding a table-service restaurant that will transport diners to a space station high above Earth. It promises to have great views.
  • New film for the China pavilion
A new in-the-round movie about China will be presented at Epcot’s pavilion. It will use a new digital “Circle-Vision 360” film and projection system that will replace the circular theater’s multiple screens with one seamless screen and image.Magic Kingdom Additions
  •  Tron ride
Next to the Star Wars-themed hotel, perhaps the most exciting new announcement made at the D23 Expo was about the Tron attraction coming to Tomorrowland in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. It will be based on Shanghai Disneyland’s Tron Lightcycle Power Run, which is arguably Disney’s most intense and best themed roller coaster. Using cycle-like cars, launched trains will blast riders into the videogame-like “Grid” of the films.
  • New theater and show
The Magic Kingdom will also be getting a new live show in a theater that will be based on an early 20th-century Kansas City playhouse. Located on Main Street, U.S.A., it will complement the area’s architecture and theme, which is tied to Walt Disney’s boyhood town.Hollywood Studios Additions
  • Toy Story Land
In addition to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge coming in 2019, Disney’s Hollywood Studios will open Toy Story Land in summer 2018. Capitalizing on the existing Toy Story Mania attraction, the land will invite visitors into Andy’s backyard for adventures among his playthings. It will include a new Alien Swirling Saucers ride featuring the green aliens from the movies.
  • Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway
The curtain will come down on The Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. In its place at the park’s centerpiece Chinese Theatre will be a new ride-through attraction based on the hip, retro-style Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts broadcast on the Disney Channel.According to Walt Disney Imagineering’s Kevin Rafferty, the E-Ticket ride will feature a “sing-able and lovable theme song” and will be presented in “2-and-a-half-D.” The breakthrough concept will present dimensional media without the need for 3-D glasses. He adds that passengers will step into the flat movie screen and onto a train – presumably a runaway locomotive – that will be operated by Goofy.
  • Disney Riviera Resort
A new Disney World hotel will be part of Disney Vacation Club, the company’s membership-based vacation ownership program. It will be located near Epcot.
  • Disney Skyliner gondolas
Moving visitors around the vast property has always been a challenge for Disney World. Instead of expanding the monorail system to address the need for more capacity, the resort is building a gondola system. It will connect Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios with some of the hotels near those parks (including the new Disney Riviera).Minnie Van service
Another new transportation option will move Disney World guests from door to door using “Minnie Vans” (great name!). They will use an Uber-like ride-hailing service.Disneyland Resort Additions/Changes
  • Marvel Land
The Guardians of the Galaxy ride that recently opened at Disney California Adventure will expand into a full-fledged Marvel Land. Chapek said that attractions based on The Avengers and Spider-Man will be part of the superhero mix.
  • Pixar Pier
With Cars Land, A Bug’s Land, and Turtle Talk with Crush, Pixar has long been prominently represented at Disney California Adventure. Soon, Paradise Pier, which is already home to Toy Story Midway Mania, will be transformed into Pixar Pier. The Incredibles and Inside Out will be added to the mix at the “seaside” boardwalk.
  • Pixar Fest
In 2018, Disneyland Resort will celebrate Pixar Fest. Disneyland Park will feature the returning Pixar Play Parade and a Pixar-themed fireworks and projection show, while Disney California Adventure will bring back the Paint the Night Parade.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see Toy Story land and the Skyliner system!

Ok, Back to my Sunday adventure…

I met up with fellow Disney enthusiast and friend Dave Koch  He is one of the hosts of the Mickey Dudes Podcast.  He was in for all 3 days and was lucky enough to attend the massive parks panel on Saturday. We headed over to the convention center around 7:45am (arrived around 8am) and worked our way to the line to get though security. The line started way past the convention center around to the old arena and Katella Ave and then weaved its way in a crazy fashion back to the entrance road from Harbor blvd. Luckily the line consistently moved and it only took about 45 minutes to get in.  If you had looked at it, you would instantly think 2 hours.

The cast members kept the line to get in organized and fun. Kudos to them.

When we finally got in, the reality of the event set in. Big Elaborate set up but limited or no availability to experience. Those exhibits that you didn’t need a “pass” for had lines that rivaled opening day Guardians of the Galaxy/Pandora wait times.

One of the most popular exhibits this year was the Scrooge McDuck Money Bin where you could jump into the money just like he did.  Nope, not for me. Apparently they gave out all of the wristbands, tickets or passes for the money bin in less than 30 minutes after the expo opened.  Keep in mind that the event lasted from 9am to 7pm and we were inside by 9:25am

Ok.. sad but lets see what else we can go do…
Sign after sign and announcement after announcement, all passes have been distributed for the day.  You even needed a pass to go to the Disney Dream Store but you had to come back later in the day.

What did I get to see?
There was a gorgeous model of what Star Wars:  Galaxy’s Edge will look like when completed. It looked amazing and only took 30 minutes to get through the line.

Dr. Dan of Dancakes was at the expo.  Dancakes is pancake art and he does an amazing job.  We watched him start a “Sleeping Beauty’s castle” pancake but moved on hoping to see the final product later on.  I can’t find a photo but here is one of Genie from Aladdin that he did.

There was a large section of Disney art, pins and collectible re-sellers that really didn’t seem to have much of a crowd on one side of the convention floor. We got to walk around – Some neat items but I wasn’t in the market.

All in all, I left feeling like I got no value for the $72 ticket. I feel like there is too much demand with too little opportunity.  How do you get around that?  There was zero chance I was going to arrive on site at 4:30am like some did for Saturday’s panels.  If that is the level of dedication required to fully experience D23, then its just not for me.

What do you think I could have done to experience more of what the 2017 D23 Expo had to offer?
